A little about offshore accounts and banks
Offshore bank — (the terms «offshore bank» and «offshore account» are not used because it is an account opened for an offshore company), but a bank located outside the depositor's country of residence, as a rule a bank located in a low-tax jurisdiction or a «tax haven», which provides legal or financial advantages:
- A high level of confidentiality
- A low or zero level of taxation. Offshore banks are attractive because no taxes are paid when working with them. This is an advantage for persons (legal entities) that do not pay profit tax or pay no taxes at all, and for persons who believe they can unlawfully conceal their net income (unlawful in those countries where the very fact of selling goods at understated prices constitutes tax evasion)
- Easy access to account management. All offshore banks offer account management via online access or telephone banking.
- Protection against the financial instability of resident banks and the political situation in the country. This is beneficial for residents of countries where there is a risk of political instability and a risk that assets may be frozen, seized or disappear, as during the Argentine economic crisis, or, closer to home, the collapse of the USSR and the bankruptcy of the «Ukraina» bank and the «Nadra» bank. The adoption of the Tax Code in Ukraine, which provides for introducing a 5% tax on citizens' income from bank deposits, also draws interest to offshore banks.
- Offshore banking is one of the few industries, along with tourism, in which geographically remote island states can compete with other countries and thereby attract investment into their developing economies.
